First things first - welcome!
Hi! 👋 I'm Ashley, and I am the real, live human behind this blog. Thanks so much for visiting! I'm excited you made your way to my site somehow, and hope you find something that inspires you.
the story behind "recess"
The transition from life as a student to life as an adult in the "real world" is a big one - one of the many lessons I've learned in my 20s. Grown-ups have more responsibilities, less hand-holding (literally), fewer naps, and so little time - especially play time. For many of us, the days of investing hours into school clubs and extracurriculars are long gone; and even further gone are the days of 15-minute recess in our elementary school playgrounds.
I made RECESS to carve out my own dedicated time and space to pursue those things I do just for fun, and hope to inspire others to do the same. Maybe we can all start a movement to bring recess back into the modern adult life!
i'm a little bit of everything.
I like to think of myself as a hybrid. I'm an analyzer with a lot of creativity, a practical thinker with an imagination. I'm a homebody who likes adventures, a California-bred East Coast denizen now back in the Bay Area. I’m neither left- nor right-brained; I don't think I'm an extravert or an introvert. When it comes to most things, I'm a little bit of both.
There's definitely one side of me that prevails more in my professional life, so I love having a blog and Etsy shop to share the thing that energize me and get me up early in the morning on weekends!
i like making things & going places.
Whenever I see something I like - jewelry, clothes, home décor, baked goods, you name it - my first thought is: how can I make this? It's so satisfying to make something tangible, with your very own hands. Most of my projects are inspired by other DIYers and artists, and I hope to be the same inspiration for others. I really believe everyone has innate creativity and craftiness!
As for my travel bug, I am always on the lookout for new exploits, near and far. I am lucky to have the means and privilege to travel, and have a long list of places to go next. Travel always opens my eyes and leaves me with fresh perspectives, and I love sharing those little stories and reflections that emerge from my adventures!
I have a social conscience.
I think it's important to share my deep desire to make a difference in the world. I want my personal and professional life to have a positive social impact. Through my education and work experience, I have personally become invested specifically in racial and social justice, environmentalism, and global development. I feel lucky to been a part of some incredible places driving social change in unique and innovative ways, and often think about how I can use my creativity and love of travel to further social change outside the workplace. I'd love to hear from you if you have ideas!
I would love to hear any feedback, comments, or questions. Shoot me a message with any questions about my custom art, suggestions or requests for my next DIY project, recommended destinations for my next adventure, or any other thoughts on your mind!
