All's well that ends well
Hello! This is my last day in Queenstown, and the last day of our two week trip around the South Island. I have really enjoyed the break and everything we have done, but I'm definitely ready to go back to Auckland and settle down. It's tiring living out of a backpack! I am in need of some clean clothes, a hot shower, and my Blankey!
Anyway, it's been awesome in Queenstown, definitely a great end to the trip. It's a really cute little town nestled in between many mountains, looking out onto a beautiful lake. Every morning, people from all over the world are in their snow gear and boots heading to one of the nearby ski fields.
On Monday, I went bungy jumping off the Nevis bungy, which was 134 meters high. First we took a rickety 5-person cable car to the pod, which was also hanging from a cable over the canyon. For some reason, I had no fear whatsoever and it was an amazing 9 seconds of free fall.
I didn't buy videos or pictures of my jump, but here's a brief (wobbly) video!
The weather down here had been unusually rainy and cloudy, but we really lucked out on Tuesday, when we went to Milford Sound. We were convinced the trip was canceled because the roads had been closed due to flooding. But the roads opened up, and our 10 hour round trip bus ride was beautiful. On arrival, the blue skies were a perfect setting for our cruise around the sounds, and after several hours of jaw-dropping beauty, we got back on the bus and ended the day with Queenstown's famous Fergburger.
The next day, we went snowboarding on the Remarkables mountain range. It was again a really luckily amazing day, as many ski fields had been closed due to weather and road issues. I couldn't have asked for a better day!
For our last day, we explored the quaint Arrowtown, a historic town settled by Chinese gold miners in the 1960s. We're going up the gondola to see a bird's eye view of Queenstown, and then one last dinner to commemorate our trip.
My semester is almost halfway up and I feel the time slipping away! This trip has made me homesick though for some reason, and it's somewhat sad to see friends starting the school year now, all reunited!
For all those who haven't heard, there was a big earthquake in Christchurch, and aftershocks of up to 6 on the richter scale are still occuring. With that and the plane crash in Fox Glacier, it's been a weird week. I am a-okay though!
Anyway, pictures will be uploaded tomorrow! Hope I'm not writing to nobody right now :)
